Banking
Configured and maintained the PCI-scoped production environment of a Maltese bank: networks, load balancers, VPNs, next-generation firewalls and Linux.
Proton IT Services helps businesses in Malta and beyond design, harden and run their Linux servers, networks and firewalls, backed by almost twenty years in banking, iGaming and government infrastructure.
Whether you need a one-off review, a project delivered end to end or an experienced engineer on call, the work is done by the same person you speak to.
An independent, senior view of your infrastructure. Architecture and security reviews, compliance readiness for regulated environments such as PCI DSS, and a clear, prioritised roadmap you can act on.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Rocky Linux estates from a handful of servers to thousands. Patch management, central identity, CIS hardening and automation so every server is built the same way, every time.
Campus, office and data-centre networks designed for resilience and easy operation, then documented so your team understands them. Routing, switching, VPNs and monitoring that tells you about problems before your users do.
New firewall deployments, migrations and rule-base clean-ups. Segmentation that limits how far an incident can spread, with every rule justified and recorded.
Occasionally, the right answer is a small piece of software: an automation script, an internal tool or an integration between systems. Where that fits, it is built with the same care for security and documentation.

Proton IT Services is the consultancy of Nicholas Xerri, an infrastructure and security engineer based in Malta.
Nicholas started out in network operations in 2006 and has since worked across government, iGaming and banking, as a network engineer, solutions architect, principal Linux engineer and senior production engineer. Along the way he has been responsible for networks, firewalls and Linux estates where downtime and security failures were not an option.
His approach is simple: understand the problem first, build things that are secure by default, automate what can be automated and document everything so you are never dependent on one person, including him.
Works in English, Maltese and Italian, with conversational French.
Tell me what you are working on. The initial consultation and quote are free, and if I am not the right fit I will say so and point you to someone who is.
